Your Degree Or Certificate Is Not A Cure For Poverty..7 Reasons Graduates & Degree Holders Are Poor!!!

Your Degree Or Certificate Is Not A Cure For Poverty

7 Reasons University Graduates & Degree Holders Are Becoming Progressively Poor!!!

“If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity, but you are not sure you can do it, say yes- then learn how to do it later!”- Richard Branson
School rewards people for their memory.

Life rewards people for their creativity and ability to solve problems. School rewards caution; life rewards daring. School hails those who live by the rules. Life exalts those who break the rules and set new ones. Being top of your class does not necessarily guarantee that you will be at the top of life.

The world is filled with poor graduates but rich opportunists! Kevin Ngo once said, “If you don’t make the time to work on creating the life you want, you’re eventually going to be forced to spend a lot of time dealing with a life you don’t want”. Your certificates and degrees are meant to help you garner the experience and expertise needed to fulfill your dreams; they are not your destination!.

I have watched pitiably many graduates with degrees and certificates languishing in poverty looking for jobs that don’t exist while people with keen eyes for opportunities reach the pinnacle of success in the most unlikeliest of ways.

Do you have a graduate or degree holder around you that is poor? I bet you have as they are everywhere! I have a very painful truth to dish out to graduates out there: Your degree or certificate is not the cure to poverty; the cure to poverty is your ability to see and seize opportunities. There are seven reasons why degree holders are poor.

#1 THEY DON’T THINK BEYOND THEIR CERTIFICATES

Albert Einstein said, “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.”
Have you ever heard of the creativity term “Think outside the box” ?
One of the major reasons why most graduates are poor is simply because they can’t see and think beyond their certificates. I have seen engineering students work as bankers. I have seen medical doctors with great skills in web and graphic designs.

I have seen lawyers that are very dexterous with finances. The list is endless! The basic truth of life is that the skills that is needed to be much sought after and become more successful in life are not really found within the walls of the classrooms.
Your certificate is just a proof that you are teachable, it does not suggest what you are totally capable of doing. You are full of possibilities when you think beyond your degrees and certificates.

#2 THEY PRIORITIZE THEIR CERTIFICATES MORE THAN THEIR GIFTS AND TALENTS

ALSO READ>  A Dead Woman's Secret

I have often advise some of my mentees, never to leave their gifts dormant while pursuing and hunting for jobs with their certificates. There must be a complementary balance in the pursuit of your passion and in the search for jobs. Everybody is gifted for something, but the winning edge comes from our ability to work on our gifts and bless the world with it.
The very best way to develop yourself is in the direction of your natural talents and interest. In order to live a fulfilled and impactful life, we need to work harder on our gift than our job. We need to discover our gift, develop it, and sell it. Don’t bury your TALENT with your certificates.

#3 THEIR CERTIFICATES PREPARE THEM FOR A WORLD THAT NO LONGER EXIST

It has been found that most of the skills taught in schools are becoming obsolete in the present world. The world has changed a lot, and so are people’s need! I was in Dubai some few years ago to attend a conference organized by the British Council with the Theme: “Education Fit For The Future: Planning For A Changing World.” It is poignant to know that the present form of education does not prepare students for the future.

Graduates are becoming endangered species in the face of a changing world. Our archaic methods and approaches of learning are preparing graduates for a world that no longer exist, as we are churning out degree holders every year with certificates that have face value but no intrinsic worth. Most institutions are filled up with lecturers and pseudo-educators with lecture notes, methods and approaches that have lost relevance in a changing world.

#4 THEY KNOW LESS ABOUT THEMSELVES BUT MORE ABOUT THINGS

ALSO READ>  How You Can Cope Under Pressure At Work (Workplace Stress Management Techniques That Work)

Certificates and degrees don’t reveal people to themselves; they at most measure our IQ (Intelligent Quotient). I have often tell people that there is no Recovery without Discovery. A poor man is simply someone that has not discovered himself.
The more you discover yourself, the more you realize the treasures that are hidden deep within you. We carry inside ourselves latent treasures that can only be unveiled through self-discovery.

#5 CERTIFICATES AND DEGREES CAN KILL INITIATIVES

Degrees and certificates can close up your minds to ideas while initiatives open it up. If you are not careful, your degrees and certificates can close up your mind. The purpose of education is to keep your mind perpetually opened towards limitless possibilities! Fred Smith saw an opportunity for overnight delivery of anything anywhere in the USA, and ultra- fast delivery anywhere in the world, FedEx was born.
It will be interesting to know that Fred Smith got a grade “C” in a Yale economics class for an idea that the professor belittled as unworkable. Smith’s company became the first American business to make over ten billion dollars in annual profit. Beginning with just 186 packages delivered the first night, FedEx now delivers in over two hundred countries using over 6,030 aircraft, 46,000 vehicles and 141,000 employees.

#6 DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES POSITION YOU TO LOOK FOR JOBS AND NOT FOR OPPORTUNITIES

Our certificates and degrees prepare graduates to look for jobs and not open our eyes to life-changing opportunities. You are not poor because you don’t have a job; you are poor because you are not seeing and seizing opportunities.
Being POOR is simply P assing O ver O pportunities
Repeatedly! .

What keep people ahead in life is not their education or degrees, it is simply the opportunity that they seized. Jobs may be scarce but not opportunities.
As long as there is a problem to be solved, there will always be opportunities.
It is a waste of our education, exposure, and experiences, if after we graduate from school, all we think about is searching for job. An enlightened and educated mind should be able to see and seize opportunities.

#7 CERTIFICATES AND DEGREES PREPARE PEOPLE TO LOOK FOR SECURITY AND NOT TO TAKE RISKS

We must be willing to make mistakes and take breakthrough risks. Taking risks and learning from mistakes help us in knowing what works and what does not! When Thomas Edison was being questioned by a mischievous journalist on how he felt for having failed for 999 times before getting the idea of the light bulb, his response stunned the whole world when he confidently said, “I have not failed 999 times, I have only learnt 999 ways of how not to make a light bulb”.
Many graduates and degree holders are becoming progressively poor because the skills required in the modern world to get rich are not taught in schools and institutions.
By 2025, we’ll lose over five million jobs to automation. That means that future jobs will look vastly different by the time many people graduate from the university. Future jobs will involve knowledge creation and innovation, and people that are only equipped with skills found in the classroom will definitely be a misfit in an ever changing world. Skills like critical thinking, creativity, people’s skill, STEM skills(e.g Coding), complex problem solving skills etc. are central to living a more comprehensive and productive life.
My candid advice to graduates and students in institutions is to think wide, deep and outside the box. Take volunteer jobs, and don’t be afraid to navigate fields that are different from your field of learning. Your future career will require you to pull information from many different fields to come up with creative solutions to future problems. Start by reading as much as you can about anything and everything that interests you. Once you get to college, consider double majoring or minoring in completely different fields. Trust me, it’ll pay off in the long run.
Don’t limit yourself to the classroom. Do something practical. Take a leadership position. Start a business and fail-that’s a better entrepreneurship.
Contest an election and lose. It will teach you something political science will not teach you. Attend a seminar.
Read books outside the scope of your course.
Think less of becoming an excellent student, but think more of becoming an excellent person. Don’t make the classroom your world, but make the world your classroom.
Step forward and try something extra. Invest in something you believe!

Stop Taking Drinks Straight From The Can, It Kills… Use Straw Or Cup For Your Own Safety

You are probably one of many Nigerians who normally take canned drinks straight from the can without using a straw or glass tumbler. You may need to drop this practice after today.

In January this year, somebody put out a public service information on a Whatsapp forum, to alert people about the death of two brothers, who were said to have died at a reputable teaching hospital in the South West.

The test results showed that they were infected with leptospirosis, and subsequently died from the complications caused by the disease. It was also apparent that the two deceased brothers were not given appropriate medical attention from the onset of the illness – another clear example of the tendency of Nigerians to engage in self-medication even in the face of worsening ill-health.

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease of humans and animals that is caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. Leptospirosis is distributed worldwide, but not found in the polar regions of the globe. It is most common in the tropics.

The organism infects a wide range of animals, including mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles and is transmitted to humans through exposure of mucous membranes or cuts in the skins to the body fluid of an acutely infected animal or by exposure to soil or fresh water which is contaminated with the urine of an animal that is a chronic carrier.

It is also known that occupational exposure probably accounts for 30-50 per cent of human cases of leptospirosis. The main occupational groups at risk include farm workers, veterinarians, pet shop owners, field agricultural workers, abattoir workers, plumbers, meat handlers and slaughterhouse workers, coal miners, workers in the fishing industry, military troops, milkers, and sewer workers.

Although leptospirosis continues to be predominantly an occupational disease, in recent decades, it has also increasingly been recognized as a disease of recreation. The disease may be acquired during “adventure” travel or sporting events that involve fresh water or hiking (eg, “mud runs”). The exotic-pet trade further increases the likelihood of transmission.

Widespread flooding may lead to epidemic spread of leptospirosis in large populations. Flooding on a smaller scale may also lead to individuals contracting the disease. Urban dwellers in economically deprived areas may contract the disease through exposure to rat urine.

In the case of the two brothers who died from the infection, they drank straight from the cans, on which rats were thought to have urinated on and the urine deposited on the can had dried while the cans were in storage before being sold to, unwittingly, to the unfortunate brothers.

How To Cope Under Pressure At Work (Workplace Stress Management Techniques That Work)

Effective Strategies For Managing Stress In The Workplace

In a fast-paced world filled with the internet, fast cars an fast foods, a lot of us experience pressure at school, home and most especially at work.

Dealing with pressure is no mean feat especially with everything that is fighting for our attention. The much we can do is to try and juggle all the activities to achieve relative balance.
Depending on what you do, you face different types of pressure. There are several reasons why we face pressure at work. Identifying and acknowledging them is actually the first step towards overcoming them.

Causes Of Stress At Work

Some of the reasons for them include:

Low Salaries
This is probably the first and major reason why most people face pressure at work. Low salaries keep employees on the edge of their seats. It makes them feel pressured to either retain the job or look for an alternative.

In a recent employee research, low salary was found to be one of the highest sources of non motivation and pressure among employees.

Unclear Goals and Expectations
Some workers are sometimes left in a state of cacophony from their employers due to lack of clarity as to what is expected of and from them. In this case, the employees are always tensed because they do not know what is coming. Aside from putting them under
pressure , such environment leads to low productivity, lack of cordination and balance. This is not good for any working environment that wishes to thrive.

Excessive Workloads

When workers have too much on their plates with little time to execute them, we say they have excessive workloads. This is the case in some working environments due to shortage of workers or a particular worker who is efficient. The result is that they are never settled to actually do a thorough work.

Apart from a poorly done job, it puts increasing pressure on the worker because he/she is trying to beat a deadline thereby making them not to reach their full capacity.

Lack of Incentives
How else would you wish to motivate your workers without some tips, bonuses or incentives every once in a while? You must remember that your employees face pressure from other activities such as family etc. adding another from work would be one too many.

Most employers think it is the customers that sustain a company. In actual fact, it is the employees because it is their attitude and disposition that would in turn affect productivity either positively or otherwise. When your employees are not treated well, it trickles down to even how they attend to customers. Some of the customers may even stop patronizing you due to the shabby treatment they got.

Aside from this, it puts pressure on the workers as they work frantically to make ends meet.
Little or No Opportunity to Grow
Some companies provide little or no opportunity for their employees to grow their career. The ideal working should be when seminars and or workshops are organized for employees in order for them to gain hands-on training working experience and training to advance their careers.

ALSO READ>  A Dead Woman's Secret

When this is not the case, it puts pressure them because it may make them feel competent, less productive and generally tensed.
Workers in this category usually leave their work place because they have little or no opportunity for growth. This usually causes a stagnation in people’s career making them feel insecure and unsatisfied. a job is not supposed to be a chore. It is supposed to be an activity that one enjoys doing.
You have to understand that pressure comes along with stress. They are like siamese twins, that cannot exist without the other. James Allen affirmed thus the more tranquil a man becomes, the greater is his success, his influence, his power for good.
You can already see that peace and quiet is directly linked to power and success. The first step is to realize that you need to fight a whole bunch of negative emotions on a daily basis. They leave you on the edge of the seat and affects your health negatively.
Everyone therefore ought to develop the ability to stay calm even when they are under pressure especially at work.
How To Deal With Pressure At Work
Here are some tips to help you deal with pressure at work.
Take some time out
It appears that taking some time out or off from the cause of the pressure is a good way to work on it.
In moments of pressure, it is always better to consider having time and space in order to see the possibilities of moving forward. Moving away from the situation could happen both ways: physically and emotionally.
Having done this, ask yourself the following questions: why am I feeling pressured? Does this happen all the time? Do I fully understand the situation? Am I being biased? Is it possible that external factors are influencing my emotions/feelings thus causing me pressure?
Most times, when we truly analyse the cause(s) of pressure, it may not be caused by factors (external) but from the inside.
For instance, hearing that you will have a meeting with your boss. Now you do not even know why he/she is calling you but you are already developing cold feet. This should only be the case when you know that you have not done what you are supposed to do.
Take deep calming breaths. The only thing that may need to change is your own perspective of the situation.
Pay Attention
This is very important when you are under pressure. Most times, it is in the details that we tend to find answers to our burning questions and needs. Usually when we feel pressure at work, we seem to be enveloped in the circumstances and situations. As a result, you become completely awash and the whole situation becomes one big jumble of mess.
Instead of focusing on the bad situation, pay close attention to the little things you may have ignored such as your behaviours, your colleagues’ behaviours and everything that is generally that is going on.
You will notice that when you are more attentive you can then separate the real issue from the imaginations. You disembody them and that is when you realize that they are little units of issues that you can actually work towards finding a solution to each of them.

Know What Stresses You
You need to clearly pin point exactly what your stressors are. This helps you know how to tackle them. This becomes all the more crucial if you switched jobs or are in a new job. You can take notes for the first month to find out which task(s) caused you more stress than others.
These situations are usually consistent so you note them in a journal or diary. How do you react to them? Was it a positive or negative reaction?
The reason why it is good to take notes is so that you can determine the stressors, find out their time frame or consistency, notice how you react. This so crucial if you wish to last long on any job.
If you have already noted them, when these situations arise, you will no longer be ruffled. You will automatically know how to deal them before they get out of control.
Stay as far away as possible from conflicts
Especially the ones you do not know their origins. Office gossips are not what you should meddle in. even if you hear news flyin
g in the office with your name tag on it, do not comment on the issue.

Doing that automatically confirms and validates the story. The same way it started, is the same way it will fizzle out. If you want to have sound health, mind, emotional balance and good mental health, stay away as far as possible from conflicts because they affect you negatively.

What this means is that you should not gossip, share too much of your personal information or issues with colleagues, discuss politics and religion and any other sensitive issue(s). Also avoid those at work who are very difficult to deal with.
Cut back on multi-tasking
Yes I know this is one of the top skills everyone aspires to have in order to be efficient at work.
However, have you ever paused to think of how this hampered your progress not to talk of reduced accuracy (which is the very purpose we are trying to achieve).

Take for instance you are on the phone with a customer and you are chatting with yet another customer and trying to resolve their issues. Your speed and accuracy will obviously suffer. So instead of multi-tasking and juggling several tasks and not completing any, do it one at a time. If you have phone calls to attend to, finish them before going into live conversations.
This way, you will accomplish a set of task instead of delving into all and having a jumbled mess at the end day.
Take breaks
If you do not take breaks, you will break down. It is as simple as that. So no matter how busy you are may be, remember that if you become incapacitated, there will always be someone to do the job.
So take short breaks every once in a while, it keeps you refreshed and enables you take on the day’s challenges with renewed vigour.
Less Coffee Please
While coffee is a good stimulant and works well when in small amounts, too much of it can actually causes stress and insomnia.
So try to cut back on the quantity you take. You may decide to have it three times weekly. Be sure to space it- Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
On a general note, try to limit and cut back on everything that is a stimulant for the sake of your own health. This goes for chocolates and chocolate snacks too.
Stay calm
This may be almost impossible when you are under pressure but doing so actually proves that you have things under control. This will take some time to perfect but with constant practice, you will. Besides the fact that staying calm actually helps you get through things, it also showcases you as being cool and unruffled. Doing this also shows you as being level-headed and capable of managing turbulent situations.
Plus you do not want to have everyone at the office asking what is wrong with you. Keep a steely appearance and do not let the tide show.
Accomplish as much as you can
No matter the pressure at work, it is no excuse not to finish your task or at least do a great deal. Keep your mind firmly focused on the task and forget about your own pressures for that particular time.
Remember that your boss obviously does not care about the pressure you are going through at work. What they care about is getting the job done and done very well.
The trick is this: get the job done before letting the pressure show or complain. Most times, employers do not care about the obstacles you face while trying to accomplish a given task. They will only care after the job had been done. Get the strap and work with it.
Get help if you must
Sometimes, you may feel like you can handle issues on your own. As a result, you keep what you are going through to yourself. Sometimes, keeping calm about issues do not work. You actually need to speak out (sometimes) or to talk to people about the pressure you are going through.

As long as you are sure to get help from them, find a therapist, or even a trusted colleague. Bare your mind to them and let them help you find a lasting solution to the problem. It is even possible that they may have had similar issues and their advice and suggestions may be all you need to get through the difficult time.

Dealing with pressure at work is something everyone faces. The difference is in the way we choose to handle them. The listed steps are simply a guide to help you. If you have other means, by all means try them, decide which ones work best for you and stick to them.
